Character information.
Character name: Llewellyn Watts
Canon: Murdoch Mysteries
Canon point: Going to take him from post season 13 ep. 6 ‘The Philately Fatality’
Age: Did some math, he would be around 30 by this point
Canon background: Murdoch Mysteries Wiki, & More Detailed Info Dump/History compilation by me
[I have some issues with the wiki, as some of the facts are a bit skewed. Such as the bit in his ‘early life’ section about his landlady taking him in and having ‘two sons.’ When in the show it was presented that while he moved in with the landlady’s family, Daniel and Hubert Marks were a similar case to himself. So it’s more likely that she took them in and raised them as her own as well. It also hasn’t been kept updated regularly. Just little nit picky things like that, though. ]

OC world information:
Abilities:

Hyper Observant: He frequently fixates on the body language/expressions of those around him, this is not limited to case investigations and bleeds into his personal interactions as well. He’s quick to notice when someone is hesitating, or uncomfortable. It makes him useful during an interrogation, or in the field. This also makes for good teamwork, often noticing when Murdoch has gone off in his own little world when he gets a breakthrough and is quick to draw attention to it.

In his personal life, it helps to make sure that the people around him are happy and well. He will worry and point things out if someone seems unwell; likewise if he notices something or someone that makes someone he cares about happy, he will meddle and intervene to set things on course.

Analytical but Intuitive: Llewellyn is a curious sort, he’s eager to start throwing around theories and quicker still to dismiss them if they seem illogical and improbable. He’s very good at coming up with ideas and considering various situations from a variety of angles. A lot of times they are pulled from his personal fountain of random obscure knowledge and facts.

He also tends to be a very thoughtful, gut feeling sort of person. Llewellyn is often ruled by how he feels about a situation/person when it comes to casework, trusting his instincts even when others try to convince him otherwise. Once he feels someone is innocent, he will follow his instincts to find the evidence to prove this (even if it means continuing to treat them as worthy of suspicion until proven otherwise). Likewise, if Llewellyn feels like something is more than it seems, he will dig until he gets to the root of it. He’s enjoys putting himself in a mock-scenario either physically or mentally, just to get a feeling for someone’s motivations or feelings to expand on a theory. This very rarely steers him wrong, and often works in tandem with his analytical methods.

Languages: He’s adept at learning different languages, although I understand that this isn’t relevant in game!

Strengths:

Driven: Llewellyn is a very self-motivated and ambitious person when it comes to seeking out justice for innocents. Especially for those who might be written off by others; either due to prejudices held against them, personal inclinations, bad habits, or ‘lower status’. He won’t be stopped once his mind set, even after receiving a direct order from a superior. This is largely due to his own personal experiences, wanting to make sure others don’t suffer the way he has, or at least are treated with the respect they deserve.

Open-minded/Unprejudiced: He is very open-minded when it comes to the world around him. He will listen to anyone’s concerns, and entertain any hypothesis if he thinks it will help solve a puzzle/problem. Llewellyn gets very offended by people are act bigoted towards minorities and won’t hesitate to question them and their behaviour if given the chance. When not given the chance, he is scene giving them scathing looks.

Compassionate: He shows extreme amounts of compassion not only for the people he cares about, but also for victims and people affected by the cases he investigates. He’s quick to ask if someone is okay when they seem off or unwell, and will go out of his way to either talk to them or do something to make up for what’s happened. He takes things to heart, and feels responsible for the well-being of those around him. Llewellyn will always respond to a plea for help, and sometimes even uses it as a learning experience for the person involved. He is also liable to take a chance on someone, even if it seems likely that they will disappoint or turn their back on him and leave him to face the consequences.

Weaknesses:

Blunt/Lacks a filter: Watts can be incredibly blunt; most of the time he doesn’t realize he’s doing it, but there are occasions when it’s completely intentional. He will generally tell it like it is, and he also takes things to be quite literally. Sometimes this gets him in trouble, and annoys the people who have to deal with him. Occasionally he does realize that his words could be taken poorly midway though saying them, and stumbles to an awkward halt.

Stubborn/Won’t let things go: Once Llewellyn has his mind set on something, he won’t let it go. Especially when it concerns a case. Being told to stop investigating for his own safety or because of the politics of the job does nothing to deter him. He also has a hard time forgiving and moving on when a person when they betray his trust.

Self Sacrificing/Reckless: Llewellyn can be incredibly reckless in regard to his own life and where his safety concerned, especially if it means protecting someone else. Doubly so if a child is involved. He will put himself in front of the source of danger. He has even gone so far as attempt to take the fall for a murder that it’s suspected his adopted brother committed.

Lacks physical strength/non combative: He prefers to use his brain, and is very much a pacifist as far as his own personal philosophies go. He is seen being clumsy and nervous in situations where someone comes at him, and is more likely to run. He would rather keep an eye on all possible escape routes to get himself out of a bad spot. Llewellyn also tends to respond by flinching and trying to move away from loud and angry confrontations, rather than lash out.

Nightmares:

Nigel Baker: Nigel Baker, was a mean spirited, cruel individual who grew up on the same street as Llewellyn and his adoptive brothers. He was described as ‘only happy when he could cause pain.’ Nigel liked to torture the Daniel and Hubert due to them being different, and in turn Llewellyn as well. He would do what he could to protect them, and given how he reacts to people around him being in danger, it’s implied that his brand of protection would have involved redirecting Nigel’s attention on himself.

Eventually, Nigel became the leader of a prominent gang in Toronto, and his violence escalated to murder. Nigel brutally tortures Daniel with a knife before killing him, and after his case was thrown out several years later, he dos the same to Hubert. It’s not unlikely that Llewellyn has nightmares inspired by or involving Nigel Baker and what happened to his brothers.

Loss/Abandonment: Llewellyn has experienced a lot of loss and abandonment in his life. His parents, his sister (twice), and the Marks twins who he considered the only family he’d ever really had.

When he was 12 his sister abandoned him, though he spent 15 years thinking she had been kidnapped and/or murdered. She resurfaced briefly during one of his cases, only to tell him to his face that sheet of her own accord because she never wanted him. Following this, Llewellyn develops a habit of panicking and asking people if they’re leaving ‘for good’ or if they’re ‘leaving us all behind’ the minute they show an interest in travelling somewhere. Due to this, and having been kicked out of his original station house due to ‘personality issues’, makes it easy to assume that he’d fear the permanent abandonment or loss of the few people he cares about, and losing where he feels he belongs in life.

Being Found Out: Llewellyn is a homosexual living in the Edwardian era. Being gay in Canada was not decriminalized until 1969. While it’s never been a particularly safe world to be gay, it was exceptionally bad during this time period. Being outed often meant jail time, violence, and a complete loss of any career or reputation that had been built. For a reference, the chief constable was outed during a murder case, and went to jail for quite a few years longer than a man who actually committed murder.

On top of that his boss, Inspector Brackenreid, is extremely homophobic. He has been known to resort to violence to get information and confessions out of someone of that inclination, would be fine with a gay person going to jail even if they didn’t commit the crime, he actually refused to keep another detective’s secret upon discovering he was gay during a case. This effectively ruins the man’s career by causing him to resign or face being fired, which would out him to the public. Llewellyn definitely fears being found out and what it could mean for not only him, but the man he’s begun courting as well.
