Appearances:
Seal Form: is an abnormally long, brown spot patterned harbour seal.
Half Form: Llewellyn can also shift to something of a half/half form. It makes some things easier, like collecting things from shipwrecks while swimming. His human half has a soft, downy layer of seal fur in the same pattern as his seal form.
Human Form: Just like canon Llewellyn. The only defining features that Selkies have to tell them apart from ordinary humans would be webbing between their fingers and toes, and his eyes take on a slightly inhuman quality at night. Reflecting light like an actual seal’s eyes would. His curls are usually still damp, unless he’s in a situation where he’s been confined to shore for a very long time.
Weaknesses:
— Llewellyn can very easily be bound to land if someone steals his skin. He generally keeps it hidden in the coves or near enough that he can get to it in a hurry if someone is on to him, and he needs to make a quick getaway.
— Iron. Being fae, Iron will harm Llewellyn to touch. It’s not as bad to start, just a bad sting like he’s touched a hot pan. But it will get worse and spread if contact is prolonged. Very painful, and it will weaken him.
— Impulsive/stubborn/self-sacrificing
— Non-combative
— Sometimes very blunt and says strange things that humans kind of side eye.
Strengths:
— Excellent swimmer. Even in his human form, Llewellyn would be an excellent swimmer. Very fast, aided by the webbing between his fingers and toes.
— Can blend in with humanity fairly well unless they’re being extremely observant.
— Compassionate
— Analytical
— Intuitive
— Hyper-focus (This has also gotten him in trouble on occasion though)
Feelings on Humans:
Selkies tend to exist on the fringe of the Seelie Court/Fae society, and their motives/intentions towards humans (aside from those looking for romantic partners) are largely unknown. Llewellyn finds them fascinating, and is largely in favour of contacting them/experiencing their world up until a particular point in his life. After this he does get a little more cautious, and his optimism suffers for it when it comes to first impressions.
Habits/hobbies:
Raiding shipwrecks: Llewellyn likes to explore recent shipwrecks once he’s checked for survivors and done his part to help out. He often raids the trunks found in passenger cabins, and delights in the colours and fabrics of clothing left behind. He has definitely amassed a large collection of outfits to help him pass as human when on shore. He also likes to collect shiny things for his friends to give them as gifts. (IE: Hairpins/hair combs and other jewels for Esther. Interesting knickknacks and items for Neph. Stuff that he thinks his adoptive brothers would enjoy messing around with.)
Learned various human languages (both spoken and written) by listening to sailors/beach goers talking or by breaking down words on signage or in newspapers that were blown onto the beach on random occasions. He’s forever curious about human literature, and an avid scholar among his kind.
Similarly, he’s constantly curious about human food, and often makes trips further from shore in human form to find something interesting to eat. He has been tempted by humans on occasion in seal form as well, and enjoys the attention when a nice human wants to share some of their meal with the friendly seal on the beach. ...Sometimes gets targeted by hungry seagulls though.
One of his more risky hobbies is crashing human parties. He dresses up in fancy clothing that he’s scavenged from ships and slips in under an assumed surname. He enjoys watching people dance and mingling while sampling all of the food. Once he gives the other guests the slip, he tends to wander around the house until he finds a personal library and spends most of his time reading until someone happens to find him or it’s time to leave. He doesn’t consider that it’s much of a risk, given he passes so well as long as no one is paying close attention to him and he’s not actively seeking out humans like other selkies do.
Llewellyn likes to volunteer his time to babysit the newer generations of selkie pups in the area for their parents, he’s incredibly soft-hearted and protective when it comes to them and the other young ocean beings that live nearby as well. He enjoys playing with, teaching, and watching over them. He makes a habit of staying closer to shore on seasons where the younger selkies are getting more curious and brave concerning the world around them.
Similar to canonical Watts, Llewellyn will fidget and mess around with random things when he needs to distract himself. He likes to keep his hands occupied while he’s thinking or has something in particular bothering him. In addition to fiddling with bits of aquatic plant life, shells, and random odds and ends from shipwrecks while in human form; he also sometimes can be seen balancing them on his flippers or head when in seal form.
Like all Selkie, he has an excellent singing voice. He generally does it for entertaining purposes among his friends, or trying to settle whoever he’s babysitting down for a nap; but he has been known to sing a fisherman’s nets full if he’s feeling generous. Especially if he knows the town is having a hard time for a season or if he’s taken a shine to a particular fisherman.
Life Events:
Abandoned as a pup by his sister after their parents died. (Where is Clarissa? Idk probably eaten by an Orcha, it got indigestion)
Wandered on his own for a while before being taken in by an older Selkie woman who was already watching over two other boys. Llewellyn became fiercely attached to them, and watches out for them to this day. (Because nope, fuck Nigel Baker, he’s not allowed to murder them in this AU. I’m putting my foot down where that is concerned at least)
At some point after this, he meets a particularly scowl-faced mermaid. it’s an interesting friendship forged, but they become quite close and Llewellyn tends to see her as the sister he wishes he had.
Life continues rather peacefully (though with plenty of excitement, sorry Esther) for quite some time after this. Llewellyn spends much of his time learning about humans, spending time with his friends, watching out for his adoptive family and making sure they stay safe, and exploring the area in the water and on land.
During this time, he meets a very young Neph on the beach, she has some interesting explanations for him on some human customs, and he tends to believe everything she says. Why would she lie? She’s his friend, after all! She has probably saved him from swarming seagulls, traps, and nets on occasion... Llewellyn also meets a very young George Crabtree, and the child likes to bring him interesting snacks from the town in exchange for stories and time spent with the selkie and his mermaid friend.
Llewellyn makes a habit of approaching new shipwrecks (often times as it’s going under, he does try to help save humans who are in trouble rather than letting them all drown), raiding trunks in passenger cabins for clothing he likes to use when trying to pass as a normal human on land. He also brings back gifts for his friends and family. His favourite find is a grey hat.
Probably starts slipping into human gatherings/parties a few years later. Especially once he’s learned how to read/speak in several languages. At one of these parties (probably meant to celebrate a ship’s return) he happens to meet an interesting man named Jack Walker. (And understands why Esther keeps an eye out for ships and has an infatuation with a sailor herself.)
Makes his first deal with the fae court at some point following this meeting, wanting Esther to be able to join him at these events. He has largely avoided being on their radar, as most of his kind tends to prefer to live outside their influence and avoid the politics, but considers this to be worth it. This is still better making a deal with a sea witch... right? It’s a favour owed, and it will eventually come around, but until then he gets to enjoy the look on Esther’s face as she gets to spend time on land with him and perhaps get to dance with a particular Naval Officer.
A few more years pass, and Llewellyn ends up in quite a bit of trouble for the first time in his life. This happens after trying to deter a man from capturing his brothers on the beach. He manages to get them to safety, but instead is overtaken and his skin is stolen in the struggle. He ends up captured himself, and placed in a travelling sideshow for creatures and fae where both he and his skin are put on display. It’s not a good time in his life, and it obviously leaves him both slightly traumatized and physically scarred. The webbing between his fingers received the most noticeable damage, and never quite heal back as neat and clean looking. His flippers are also scarred when in seal form.
He is eventually found and his escape is secured, but he is a little more wary of humans following this time in his life. He still likes to believe that they can be good, but is aware that not all of them can be trusted and isn’t as eager to make contact unless he’s feeling sure. It takes a while for him to brave parties again, but the need for normalcy eventually wins out against his better judgement.
Llewellyn resumes his life, and strives to go back to the way things were. He generally throws himself back into his studies and hobbies rather than talk about what happened. It’s easier to ignore his feelings on things if he always has something to do.
He starts to compile his thoughts and notes about the world that he deems important in a waterproof field notebook (thank you Neph). They are wildly inaccurate, and often cryptic or philosophical in nature. It... unsettles townsfolk. Suddenly they have a new cryptid to talk about, and it becomes a legend that spreads. This sometimes brings about a boost in tourism. In seal form, Llewellyn often enjoys the snacks that are left by people trying to catch a glimpse of whatever is writing notes. Humans are largely amused by the seal, though disappointed that no strange creature makes an appearance.
