(CRAU) background: The Sphere - Year and Three Months
Llewellyn was scooped directly out of a very complicated day when he woke up at in a strange sup-aquatic experiment run by an entity known as the Sphere. His trust for the entity was not particularly high to begin with, as it chose was known to choose the voice of the person they trusted most to communicate with the people it took. For him, it was his dead partner’s voice that he heard speak to him, and that was both unsettling and upsetting to wake up to.
He was used to his life throwing him unpleasant twists and handled it the way he handles most of the stressful situations and emotional turmoil in his life. He threw himself into work. That meant he didn’t take long to start asking questions and reaching out to find out what people knew, having taken what he was told upon waking with a grain of salt. To him, the sphere was a mystery that needed to be solved if any of them were ever going to get home.
The first month was rather uneventful, but not entirely without note. His first day alone was rather interesting, between the overwhelming responses to his inquiries on what to expect from the world and what was known thus far along with being reminded of what it was like to live with other people. The sphere had placed him in a dormitory to live among others, and after a rather unfortunate (or fortunate) incident with waking someone up from a nap, he had to adjust to the change in lifestyle. More used to navigating social expectations at work than he was in his personal life.
It was a good experience though, overall he grew very attached to several of his dorm-mates. So much so, that he committed to staying based on the fact that several of them were so young and the hazards of this world left him worried about their wellbeing. So he stuck around, both to keep an eye on them to make sure they didn’t get in trouble, and to make sure that there was someone there for them if they needed to talk. One in particular was prone to seeking him out for advice, and like a hypocrite he tended to give advice that he hardly would have taken himself...
At least for the first few months.
The other dorm-mate that he got attached to was actually the first person he met, Rhy Maresh. Though their introduction was rather comical (a nap interrupted, an attempted weaponization of a pillow), and the man left Llewellyn (already rather anxious and flustered between the turmoil brought on by the realizations of his last day in his own world and the arrival in this one) a little off kilter. The detective found him very intriguing, and there was a certain attraction... But Llewellyn was clumsy with dealing with such things, and was still dealing with several recent traumas in his own life (by... not dealing with them). He wasn’t really ready to respond to advancements, and Rhy’s flirtations were rather confusing for him. They agreed to a friendship, and Rhy was very comforting and firm about not making him uncomfortable.
As things progress, Llewellyn soon discovered that his first month at the Sphere was certainly a bit of a fluke and learned that unfortunately there were very unpleasant things that came of living there. Nightmares manifested or influenced your very person, and one’s memories being thrown across the network for all to see.
In some ways, it wasn’t always a bad thing for him (as much as it felt that way). It forced him to actually talk to the friends he was slowly making there. It helped him grow as a person, and certainly become more comfortable with certain aspects of himself (ie: his sexuality). During one notable conversation, Llewellyn had a very good conversation with a friend concerning the future of his world and that some things got better. While it didn’t necessarily help his situation in his own time, it did give him some hope knowing that the world would change. He was also on occasion faced with the realization that sometimes his pushy nature towards trying to talk to people about their problems and help, was a little too insistent and he had to learn to try to pull back on it a little. He doesn’t necessarily always manage to stop himself, but he at least tries to not be a wreaking ball.
In other ways, the nightmares and memory-shares had a very negative effect on his mental wellbeing. Things that he didn’t necessarily deal with in his life (he’s very much ‘I’ll just push it down, keep working, then it cant catch up!’ kind of person) that were dredged up. Especially the more recent traumas that he hadn’t quite gotten far enough ahead of. One involving the murder of his brother brought a lot to the surface and he stopped sleeping most nights, and often could be found at his office just working away or passed out at his desk where any nightmares wouldn’t disturb his dorm-mates.
As the months progressed, Llewellyn found himself growing much more accustomed to the world and attached to the people that were there with him. While the nightmares and memory shares were unpleasant and horrifying, he still started to find he actually didn’t mind being there as much... The way people were, the societal expectations, were all quite different from what he’d grown up used to. He was inspired by some friends to try new things, and others to embrace smaller interests and habits that he’d generally never taken seriously based on how appropriate they might be considered for someone such as himself.
And most of all, Llewellyn thrived on the acceptance that people gave him. He felt comfortable in his own skin, which is not an easy thing for him sometimes. They never seemed to mind his scattered nature (his mind like a ‘flock of starlings’ as he tends to put it) and felt like he belonged among them. Which was something that, given some of the things that had happened just before he arrived, he’d felt slipping through his fingers back in his own world... He even found a partner of sorts at his investigation office in his best friend Enis Edrin.
The sphere even deemed it necessary to give him a dog during his first summer there. A small basset hound puppy named Pretzel. Despite never having a dog, nor expressing an interest in having one, he grew to be quite attached to the god. The dog had a very positive effect on his mental health, giving him company when he needed it and something to distract himself with that wasn’t necessarily investigation related when it came to training the animal (though he did train it to scent track once he learned of the breeds talent for it).
Over time (and one awkward nudge into a ball pit), Llewellyn found himself growing comfortable enough to open up to the possibilities of allowing for something more with his friend Rhy. Together, they formed a very slow growing, but deep relationship.
Unfortunately, not everything was meant to continue as routinely as they had and in the fall the sphere began to remove parts of the world and shut down as part of its experiment. It intended to drive everyone to make incredibly difficult decisions in which it offered each individual the chance to go home if they sacrificed everyone else. Llewellyn didn’t actually make it to that point in the experiment, being injured severely by unknown individuals when the local population turned against those who’d come from other worlds. He was put into a medical coma and did not awaken until after the others had fixed the sphere’s systems and restarted everything.
Llewellyn awoke feeling not only guilty for his absence when everyone needed him, but also with the realization that there was no telling when the sphere would send him home, or when it would end everything in whatever way it wanted. It prompted him to get a little more serious about enjoying what he had while he had it, hobbies that he wanted to focus on, things he wanted to enjoy with his friends, and his relationship with his then boyfriend, Rhy.
Over the next few months, Llewellyn still focused on investigations around the sphere (primarily with his friends Harry and Enis) , even going so far as to have a very eye-opening conversation with the entity, but spent a lot of time trying new experiences and enjoying moments with Rhy. He started to let himself heal, to commit to letting go of some of the hurt in his life. He hasn’t been entirely successful, but he’s definitely gotten quite far with it. And, largely thanks to Rhy, he’s allowed himself to feel a little more hopeful. So when the man proposed to him on New Years Eve, he said yes.
The wedding was held near the end of his time there, in early April they held a small ceremony and threw a large party for their friends and all the other residents of the sphere. Llewellyn could say that he’d never been happier in his life... For the first time in a long time, he could say he could say he had family. A small one, of him and his husband and their dog, but still... a family.
It wasn’t long after this, after they redecorated and arranged his office so they could work there together, that the sphere seemingly decided that he wasn’t necessary for the experiment anymore and let him go...
abilities:
Llewellyn is just a normal human guy, and so he has no special powers or abilities.
That said, while it’s not necessarily an ability so much as a talent:
Languages: He’s adept at learning different languages, he’s often called upon to translate messages or talk to people for a case. It’s unclear how many he speaks, probably sitting around 6 for the count.
Personality:
Driven: Llewellyn is a very self-motivated and ambitious person when it comes to seeking out justice for innocents. Especially for those who might be written off by others; either due to prejudices held against them, personal inclinations, bad habits, or ‘lower status’. He won’t be stopped once his mind is set, even after receiving a direct order from a superior. This is largely due to his own personal experiences, wanting to make sure others don’t suffer the way he and those he cares about have in the past, or at least are treated with the respect they deserve.
Open-minded He is very open-minded when it comes to the world around him. He will listen to anyone’s concerns, and entertain any hypothesis if he thinks it will help solve a puzzle/problem. He’s not as quick to dismiss George’s talk of ghosts or magic, he’d rather learn more before he judges something.
Hyper Observant: Llewellyn frequently fixates on the body language/expressions of those around him, this is not limited to case investigations and bleeds into his personal interactions as well.
Compassionate: He shows extreme amounts of compassion not only for the people he cares about, but also for victims and people affected by the cases he investigates. He’s quick to ask if someone he cares about if they’re okay when they seem off or unwell, and will go out of his way to either talk to them or do something to make up for what’s happened. He takes things to heart, and feels responsible for the well-being of those around him. Llewellyn will always respond to a plea for help, and sometimes even uses it as a learning experience for the person involved. He usually liable to take a chance on someone, even if it seems likely that they will disappoint or turn their back on him and leave him to face the consequences. Llewellyn also tends to get very offended by people are act bigoted towards minorities and won’t hesitate to question them and their behaviour if given the chance. When not given the chance, he is seen giving them rather scathing looks. He can, and will, be a nuisance on someone else’s behalf.
Curious: Llewellyn is a very curious fellow, always digging into things that catch his interest or attention. Sometimes almost obsessively so if he finds something interesting and wants to learn more about it. A lot of what he’s learned in his life has been self taught, given his status in life, and so he’s spent a lot of time reading and trying to teach himself about a very random assortment of subjects. Other times, it means he’s prone to asking a lot of questions from people who do know more than he does about something. Then there’s always the fact that he doesn’t really hesitate to mess around with things he doesn’t quite understand, especially Murdoch’s inventions if they’re left unattended.
Blunt/Lacks a filter: Watts can be incredibly blunt sometimes; most of the time he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it, but there are occasions when it’s completely intentional. He will generally tell it like it is, and he also takes things to be quite literal. Sometimes this gets him in trouble, and annoys the people who have to deal with him. Occasionally he does realize that his words could be taken poorly midway though saying them, and leaves him stumbling to an awkward halt.
Stubborn/Won’t let things go: Once Llewellyn has his mind set on something, he won’t let it go. Especially when it concerns a case. Being told to stop investigating for his own safety or because of the politics of the job does nothing to deter him. He also has a hard time forgiving and moving on when a person when they betray his trust.
Self Sacrificing/Reckless: Llewellyn can be incredibly reckless in regard to his own life and where his safety concerned, especially if it means protecting someone else. Doubly so if a child is involved. He will put himself in front of the source of danger. This stems from trauma that took place in his childhood. He has even gone so far as attempt to take the fall for a murder that it’s suspected his adopted brother committed.
Prone to pessimism: Llewellyn’s been through enough that he has a hard time not seeing the glass as half empty sometimes. It’s almost as though he’d rather not get his hopes up, because he knows the world is very prone to letting him and those who need a break down.
Lacks physical strength/non combative: He prefers to use his brain, and is very much a pacifist as far as his own personal philosophies go. He is seen being clumsy and nervous in situations where someone comes at him aggressively, and is more likely to make a hasty retreat. He would rather keep an eye on all possible escape routes to get himself out of a bad spot. Llewellyn also tends to respond by flinching and trying to move away from loud and angry confrontations, rather than lash out. The one time we’ve seen him in a physical altercation, he’s dropped like a rock and doesn’t really try to fight back. It’s possible that this also stems from past trauma...
