Modern Au:

Because I have been throwing him at the TFLN meme and it makes sense to modern AU him in those kinds of situations, this will be a collection of random thoughts and stuff about what he’d be like modern day. Personality wise he’d be the same, for sure, but otherwise I just head canon little modern additions that I think would fit his character. I also tend to diverge from canon when it comes to his career, sometimes private detective just makes more sense in a modern setting considering the whole station house 1 firing him thing.

Things of Note:

1. Watts keeps a dry erase board in his apartment. It’s bare without any markers to draw on it. He’s probably hid them so his friends stop doodling on it and ruining his minds visual references. This is because he really liked Murdoch‘s chalk board, and wants to get his own despite rarely intending to write on it. He just wants to... Stare at it, visualize things on it, and think.

2. His computer screen is both a chaotic mess of random files and images, while also having dozens of very specifically arranged and organized folders within folders. There is no in between. Jackson takes it upon himself to sort and organize it once a month for him up until his passing. Because, well, we’ve seen the confetti like notes he keeps before Jackson gets him properly organized. >_>

3. Probably has a Friday night tradition of watching shows like buzzfeed unsolved and drinking with George. He prefers the true crime side of things while George prefers supernatural/ghost hunting stuff. They end up having very strange debates about either the cases or cryptids/ghosts.

4. Writes all his notes while on the go on whatever is around. Receipts, napkins, his arms/hands. (Also something Jackson takes upon himself to tidy up and transcribe to a notebook or a computer document whenever they work together)

5. Due to his habit of sitting on any surface (no matter how awkward or bizarre) that he feels like, he’s become something of a station meme among his coworkers.

6. His fridge is probably full of take out leftovers and frozen finger foods.

7. Fidgets. He definitely keeps things handy around his apartment to play with when he’s trying to work. Probably has an actual Rubik’s cube on his desk for when he’s feeling particularly agitated or stressed. He has a habit of playing with cups, his hat, pencils and pens in the series. Because of this, I think it fits him pretty well. If he doesn’t have any of those things he probably takes to clicking desk pens until someone makes him stop.

8. Probably camps out at a Tim Hortons if he’s stuck on something, drinks far too much coffee and eats far too many Timbits until he gets past the roadblock in his mind.

9. Would probably be suited to adopting a cat or a chill dog if given the opportunity. - OOC head canoning Watts will eventually adopt a basset hound puppy because apparently I’m weak and dogs are great for mental health, and he could use that lbr. Update: This has happened, he has a growing wrinkle named Pretzel and is teaching it how to track with the help of his friend Esther. Link 1, Link 2, & Link 3

10. I head canon that Watts would probably enjoy classic movies and tv of varying genres, as well as independent films. It wouldn’t be weird to imagine that he enjoy the odd marathon with wine and snacks.

11. His fashion choices are fairly similar to the original canon (with some updated styles, of course) with three piece suits and his trademark hat. Still loves mixing solids with stripes or plaids, and probably wears a lot of greys browns or greens depending on the day. Absolutely has a whole collection of patterned ties. The biggest change would definitely be the addition of floral patterned shirts. Also for casual wear probably layered sweaters with collared shirts. He seems to favour the higher style shirt collars in the actual series. Boy likes to keep his neck covered.

12. Probably has glasses earlier than his ‘Inspector Years’. Since eye-care/health-care is better in modern times, any vision problems would have probably been caught a lot earlier. He still probably wears contacts a lot though, as they are more convenient and less easy to break than actual glasses.

13. Llewellyn gravitates towards flowers and picking at them/foliage through much of the series. In a recent episode, he reveals having stashed some in the pages of his notebook. I think it’s a reasonable headcanon that he genuinely likes flowers, and could see him having some plants around his apartment. Probably a little window garden!

He probably gravitates towards things that flower (smaller buds, easier to pick at, easier to press in novels/notebooks), and fuzzy succulents (bear paw, panda plant, teddy bear vines). Things that are genuinely pleasant to look at, and easy to fuss with/handle/pick from given he likes to fidget and keep his hands busy. It’s a nice alternative to reading when he has downtime and needs something to do and wants to move around but can’t go out. Sharp/prickly cacti are out, he won't go near them as they are not fun to mess around with.

Apartment Headcanons

Due to the fact that Watts has commented on several occasions that he finds the lighting or atmosphere pleasing when in a building or home that has large windows or skylights, and he was the one person who actually liked the layout and design of Murdoch’s modern home; I like to head canon that he would find himself a one room studio apartment in an old refurbished warehouse.

It would be a wide open room with large old windows running along one wall with exposed brickwork. While he keeps it clean, it is incredibly cluttered with papers from work and random items he leaves lying around. Watts isn’t known for being particularly organized, and in his own space it’s far less contained than it would be at his desk at the station.

He likely has slightly worn, but comfortable furniture arranged to continue his work from home or for his down time. Llewellyn probably doesn’t get a lot of company, but there is enough space and seating should people show up. Entertainment wise he has a decent sized television and a Blu-ray player, along with an old stereo system.

Llewellyn keeps a small, double bed in one corner next to several bookshelves for nighttime reading (philosophy, possibly poetry, and works of classic fiction) for when he decides to pass out for the night. Another portion of the apartment is dedicated to a home office space with a desk for his computer, and a white board for a visual frame of reference. He has two small spaces set aside for ‘Family Photos,’ this includes the photo of him with Hubert and Daniel, along with pictures of those closest to him. One space is on one of the book shelves near his bed, as well as one on his work desk.
(Basically the specific CR that has progressed to that point in this AU.)

The kitchen is minimal, given Watts doesn’t spend a lot of time actually cooking. Probably uses the microwave more than the stove, and eats over the sink or at the counter if he’s alone. A stove with a frying pan and the odd pot or kettle for when the mood strikes him, or he wants to actually make breakfast in the morning instead of grabbing it on the way to work. His fridge of course is full of left over take out or easy to make finger foods. He also has an extensive collection of wines on a strategically placed rack along the same wall.

The large window filled wall likely has an array of plants sitting along the ledges, something to tend to during in his spare time when he wants something to do but the weather doesn’t permit going out. He likes to pick at buds/leaves to play with or press in his books/notebooks for later.

Paranormal Investigator AU:

When you get fired from the constabulary and your friend suggests you move to Europe to open a paranormal P.I. Office but the town thinks you’re a vampire hunter. So the first thing you do is make friends with the vampire instead. >> His cases would span outside the realm of vampires though, included (but not limited to) ghosts, werewolves, and fae creatures. Basically throw a supernatural entity at him! It’ll be fun for everyone!

Zombie Apocalypse AU:

What it says on the tin. It’s a sad time. Watts is not made for this life and he knows it. His survival is heavily reliant on if he has other survivors around that he feels responsible for. His glass half-empty mindset is entirely empty.

Ghost Watts Aus:

AU 1 - Modern Ghost

Watts gets shot and killed during a case, then after haunting the station for a few days (not quite registering that he’d died at first). He eventually ends up following a friend home in order to make sure that they'd be okay. Eventually after some chaotic situations in which Watts would accidentally make electronics go haywire and had a spooky panic attack, he's able to become visible to them (uncertain if anyone else could see him in these situations as of yet) when he wants to be seen.

Things of note:

Watts is able to influence or manipulate electronic devices to varying degrees. Sometimes he over does it and the device could short out (or cause a power surge through the electrical system), but otherwise it becomes a good way to get attention or entertain himself around the apartment.

On a similar note, Watts is only able to communicate through the speakers on electronic devices. Thus far he’s used a cell phone, home stereo system, and car radio. Without these things, he’s effectively mute to the living. He can be seen visibly speaking, but no sound is heard.

Watts can move/pickup small, light physical objects. It’s hit and miss, and he really has to focus to do so. He also can’t open ziplock bags, which is a source of frustration when he wants to open a treat bag to make up to Hades for all the confusion.

He exhibits some poltergeist habits as far as his emotions go, and both electricity and physical obects can become agitated when he does. It is exceptionally bad if he’s extremely upset/panicking about something.

No longer bound by the laws of physics, Watts can end up in some interesting situations. Still prone to sitting on or leaning on whatever is near by, sometimes he slips through objects if he becomes distracted/forgets himself. He also tends to disappear and reappear at random if something catches his interest or he’s upset and fleeing a situation. He can start in one place, disappear, then reappear somewhere else without missing a beat.

AU 2 - Original Era Watts Haunting Through The Years - WIP

He’s canonical Watts and has been haunting the house he got murdered in since the Edwardian era by that corrupt detective from station house... 5 I think it was (need to check)? Both versions have the same/similar abilities. This can be played in any era you like, because he’ll be haunting the world for hundreds of years probably.

Teen AU:
Thus far it’s only been played in a modern setting, but could easily play with that to be back in canon-era and any other era/world you like. It’s just basically Llewellyn being an awkward, nerdy teenager trying to survive his youth.

Fae/Selkie AU: WIP

Appearances:

Seal Form: is an abnormally long, brown spot patterned seal.

Half Form: Llewellyn can also shift to something of a half/half form. It makes some things easier, like collecting things from shipwrecks while swimming. His human half has a soft, downy layer of seal fur in the same pattern as his seal form.

Human Form: Just like canon Llewellyn. The only defining features that Selkies have to tell them apart from ordinary humans would be webbing between their fingers and toes, and his eyes take on a slightly inhuman quality at night. Reflecting light like an actual seal’s eyes would. His curls are usually still damp, unless he’s in a situation where he’s been confined to shore for a very long time.

Weaknesses:

— Llewellyn can very easily be bound to land if someone steals his skin. He generally keeps it hidden in the coves or near enough that he can get to it in a hurry if someone is on to him, and he needs to make a quick getaway.

— Iron. Being fae, Iron will harm Llewellyn to touch. It’s not as bad to start, just a bad sting like he’s touched a hot pan. But it will get worse and spread if contact is prolonged. Very painful, and it will weaken him.

— Impulsive/stubborn/self-sacrificing

— Non-combative

— Sometimes very blunt and says strange things that humans (and some fae) kind of side eye.

— Super literal minded sometimes

Strengths:

— Excellent swimmer. Even in his human form, Llewellyn would be an excellent swimmer. Very fast, aided by the webbing between his fingers and toes.

— Can blend in with humanity fairly well unless they’re being extremely observant.

— Compassionate

— Analytical

— Intuitive

— Hyper-focus (This has also gotten him in trouble on occasion though)

Feelings on Humans:

Selkies tend to exist on the fringe of the Seelie Court/Fae society, and their motives/intentions towards humans (aside from those looking for romantic partners) are largely unknown. Llewellyn finds them fascinating, and is largely in favour of contacting them/experiencing their world up until a particular point in his life. After this he does get a little more cautious, and his optimism suffers for it when it comes to first impressions.

Habits/hobbies:

Raiding shipwrecks: Llewellyn likes to explore recent shipwrecks once he’s checked for survivors and done his part to help out. He often raids the trunks found in passenger cabins, and delights in the colours and fabrics of clothing left behind. He has definitely amassed a large collection of outfits to help him pass as human when on shore. He also likes to collect shiny things for his friends to give them as gifts. (IE: Hairpins/hair combs and other jewels for Esther. Interesting knickknacks and items for Neph. Stuff that he thinks his adoptive brothers would enjoy messing around with.)

Learned various human languages (both spoken and written) by listening to sailors/beach goers talking or by breaking down words on signage or in newspapers that were blown onto the beach on random occasions. He’s forever curious about human literature, and an avid scholar among his kind.

Similarly, he’s constantly curious about human food, and often makes trips further from shore in human form to find something interesting to eat. He has been tempted by humans on occasion in seal form as well, and enjoys the attention when a nice human wants to share some of their meal with the friendly seal on the beach. ...Sometimes gets targeted by hungry seagulls though.

One of his more risky hobbies is crashing human parties. He dresses up in fancy clothing that he’s scavenged from ships and slips in under an assumed surname. He enjoys watching people dance and mingling while sampling all of the food. Once he gives the other guests the slip, he tends to wander around the house until he finds a personal library and spends most of his time reading until someone happens to find him or it’s time to leave. He doesn’t consider that it’s much of a risk, given he passes so well as long as no one is paying close attention to him and he’s not actively seeking out humans like other selkies do.

Llewellyn likes to volunteer his time to babysit the newer generations of selkie pups in the area for their parents, he’s incredibly soft-hearted and protective when it comes to them and the other young ocean beings that live nearby as well. He enjoys playing with, teaching, and watching over them. He makes a habit of staying closer to shore on seasons where the younger selkies are getting more curious and brave concerning the world around them.

Similar to canonical Watts, Llewellyn will fidget and mess around with random things when he needs to distract himself. He likes to keep his hands occupied while he’s thinking or has something in particular bothering him. In addition to fiddling with bits of aquatic plant life, shells, and random odds and ends from shipwrecks while in human form; he also sometimes can be seen balancing them on his flippers or head when in seal form.

Like all Selkie, he has an excellent singing voice. He generally does it for entertaining purposes among his friends, or trying to settle whoever he’s babysitting down for a nap; but he has been known to sing a fisherman’s nets full if he’s feeling generous. Especially if he knows the town is having a hard time for a season or if he’s taken a shine to a particular fisherman.

Friends & Family:

George Crabtree: A human who grew up new the shores where Watts lives, very excited about the otherworldly side of things and the Selkie, Mermaid and Fae folk he became acquainted with in his formative years definitely influenced his wild imagination and story telling abilities.

Julia: Julia is quite a bit older than he is, a faerie that is very much enjoying life and has spent much of it flitting from interest to interest. She usually excels at most of her pursuits, but does eventually get bored and move on to another challenge. She’s entirely infatuated however with a local inventor, though. He’s just as infatuated, but largely oblivious when it comes to love so they’ve been dancing around each other for a while. It’s obvious to EVERYONE, and George is often worried that William Murdoch will die of old age before they get together.

William Murdoch: Human inventor, Llewellyn enjoys harassing the man by messing around with his inventions when he visits. It’s... an odd friendship, because Llewellyn gets bored of all the science despite his interest in fidgeting with devices. It’s often noted that they get along like siblings, though ironically Murdoch always comes off with older-sibling vibes despite Watts being a few centuries old by this point.

Aldous Germaine: A fairy that has a seat on the fairy court, very popular in many social circles. Llewellyn’s only contact on the court, largely because the man is just so friendly and agreeable. He doesn’t spend too much time fussing over politics, and is more interested in human affairs. He tends to inspire artists, and is very heavily involved in the art world. He is quite good at finding pieces of art, or antiquities that belong to older fae families and making sure they get back to where they belong.

Hubert and Daniel: Selkie twins that Llewellyn grew up with. They are in every way but blood his family, and he is incredibly loyal and protective of them. They both are very kind hearted, with Daniel being more comedic and Hubert being the more creative. He probably spends most of his down time with them, especially following the incident that lead to his being trapped on land for several years.

Esther Moreau: Scowly Mermaid Friend who dislikes humans and has a nasty scar that honestly justifies the amount of illegal fishing vessels she’s brought down. She might as well be Llewellyn’s sister after meeting and growing close to her from a young age. He respects her a lot, and counts her as his family, just as he does with the Selkie twins Hubert and Daniel. He worries her often with his habit of wandering around on shore for long periods of time, but he usually finds a way to make it up to her. They also spend some afternoons watching for very specific ships that might hold a certain naval officer.

Life Events:

Abandoned as a pup by his sister after their parents died.

Wandered on his own for a while before being taken in by an older Selkie woman who was already watching over two other boys. Llewellyn became fiercely attached to them, and watches out for them to this day. (Because nope, fuck Nigel Baker, he’s not allowed to murder them in this AU. I’m putting my foot down where that is concerned at least)

At some point after this, he meets a particularly scowl-faced mermaid. it’s an interesting friendship forged, but they become quite close and Llewellyn tends to see her as the sister he wishes he had.

Life continues rather peacefully (though with plenty of excitement, sorry Esther) for quite some time after this. Llewellyn spends much of his time learning about humans, spending time with his friends, watching out for his adoptive family and making sure they stay safe, and exploring the area in the water and on land.

During this time, Llewellyn meets a very young George Crabtree, and the child likes to bring him interesting snacks from the town in exchange for stories and time spent with the selkie and his mermaid friend.

Llewellyn makes a habit of approaching new shipwrecks (often times as it’s going under, he does try to help save humans who are in trouble rather than letting them all drown), raiding trunks in passenger cabins for clothing he likes to use when trying to pass as a normal human on land. He also brings back gifts for his friends and family. His favourite find is a grey hat.

Probably starts slipping into human gatherings/parties a few years later to enjoy the food and get a glimpse of the hosts personal libraries. Especially once he’s learned how to read/speak in several languages.

Makes his first deal with the fae court at some point following this meeting, wanting Esther to be able to join him at these events. He has largely avoided being on their radar, as most of his kind tends to prefer to live outside their influence and avoid the politics, but considers this to be worth it. This is still better making a deal with a sea witch... right? It’s a favour owed, and it will eventually come around, but until then he gets to enjoy the look on Esther’s face as she gets to spend time on land with him and perhaps get to dance with a particular Naval Officer.

A few more years pass, and Llewellyn ends up in quite a bit of trouble for the first time in his life. This happens after trying to deter a man from capturing his brothers on the beach. He manages to get them to safety, but instead is overtaken and his skin is stolen in the struggle. He ends up captured himself, and placed in a travelling sideshow for creatures and fae where both he and his skin are put on display. It’s not a good time in his life, and it obviously leaves him both slightly traumatized and physically scarred. His hands and the webbing between his fingers received the most noticeable damage, and never quite heal back as neat and clean looking. His flippers are also scarred when in seal form.

He is eventually found and his escape is secured, but he is a little more wary of humans following this time in his life. He still likes to believe that they can be good, but is aware that not all of them can be trusted and isn’t as eager to make contact unless he’s feeling sure. It takes a while for him to brave parties again, but the need for normalcy eventually wins out against his better judgement.

Llewellyn resumes his life, and strives to go back to the way things were. He generally throws himself back into his studies and hobbies rather than talk about what happened. It’s easier to ignore his feelings on things if he always has something to do.

He starts to compile his thoughts and notes about the world that he deems important in a waterproof field notebook (thank you Neph). They are wildly inaccurate, and often cryptic or philosophical in nature. It... unsettles townsfolk. Suddenly they have a new cryptid to talk about, and it becomes a legend that spreads. This sometimes brings about a boost in tourism. In seal form, Llewellyn often enjoys the snacks that are left by people trying to catch a glimpse of whatever is writing notes. Humans are largely amused by the seal, though disappointed that no strange creature makes an appearance.

Timeline is heavily WIP, need to add more details about Victorian/Edwardian era and also a section for modern day selkie Llewellyn for his more recent life events!
